Hi, I'm Mark (Mutti) - welcome to my little website 👋
Amateur radio (also called "ham radio") is a licensed hobby where people communicate using radio frequencies, from across town to around the world without other people's infrastructure in between! It attracts tinkerers, hikers, emergency responders, and anyone who likes building things that transmit. I'm one of those people, and K3MGM is my FCC-issued callsign - a unique ID that's mine on the air.
I'm writing here about the stuff I'm learning and building along the way: our ham hikes up peaks around Southern California, gear notes, technical builds that usually involve duct-taping APIs to dashboards, lessons learned, mobile operations, Starlink, photography, and beyond.
Currently, I'm enjoying all the bands my General class license allows me, from Los Angeles and around the western U.S. on road trips with our little family of three humans and two dogs.
When I'm not spending time with my family or working as a DevOps Engineer, I'm working on Landmark 717, my not-for-profit documentary series covering the Angeles National Forest. That project has taken on a life of its own and I find myself volunteering for various digital communications tasks that seem to make the forest's firefighters' lives a little easier. Perhaps more on that some other time.
